Some of my earliest memories include eating the fresh tomatoes, onions and radishes from Marlin’s garden. He has maintained the same plot in his backyard since 1964. Marlin retired from the Muncy Chief Hybrid Seed Company after 43 years of breeding field corn and feed grains. He always saved seeds from his prized crops in his home garden. The garlic was a gift from the grandfather of his lifelong companion, Judy.

Born in 1902, Judy’s grandfather came from a small town near Naples, Italy to seek a new life in Williamsport, Pennsylvania in the early 1920s. Poppa Piccolo was a huckster, or neighborhood produce vendor, for much of the first half of the 20th century. The origin of the garlic is not clear, but when he gave Marlin a bunch of bulbs in 1985 he told Marlin he had been growing it for over 60 years. When he passed away at age 93 in 1995, Poppa Piccolo’s garlic was in good hands. Now it is in mine.
